Why this happens
SSI is paid on the 1st of every month. When the 1st falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, Social Security pays on the business day before, which can be the last business day of the previous month. That leaves one month with two deposits and the next month with none. The total you receive over the year does not change.
Make the January money last
The December 30, 2027 deposit has to cover January. There is no SSI deposit in January; the next one is Tuesday, February 1, 2028.
Two SSI payments in December: common questions
Why are there two SSI payments in December 2027?
SSI is due on the 1st of each month. January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so Social Security pays the January SSI payment early, on Thursday, December 30, 2027. Your regular December payment arrives Wednesday, December 1, 2027.
Is the second SSI payment in December extra money?
No. It is your January 2028 payment, paid early. The amount is your normal monthly SSI.
Will I get an SSI payment in January 2028?
No. Because the January payment already arrived on December 30, 2027, there is no SSI deposit in January. Your next payment after that is on Tuesday, February 1, 2028.
Do Social Security and SSDI also pay twice this month?
No. Social Security and SSDI are paid once a month on your birthday Wednesday or the 3rd. Only SSI, which is due on the 1st, gets paid early into the previous month.
How should I budget for the early payment?
Treat the December 30, 2027 deposit as money for January. It has to last until your next deposit on Tuesday, February 1, 2028.
