How Social Security decides your payment day
Social Security runs three payment cycles. If you started receiving benefits in May 1997 or later, your day is set by your birth date: the second Wednesday of the month if you were born on the 1st to 10th, the third Wednesday for the 11th to 20th, and the fourth Wednesday for the 21st to 31st. For family and survivor benefits, and for SSDI paid on someone else's record, the worker's birth date counts.
People who started benefits before May 1997, who also receive SSI, whose Medicare premiums are paid by their state, or who live abroad are paid on the 3rd of every month instead. SSI is a separate program and is paid on the 1st.
Whatever your cycle, a payment that falls on a weekend or federal holiday is made on the business day before. That is why SSI sometimes arrives twice in one month and not at all in the next, and why a Wednesday payment can move to Tuesday when a holiday such as Veterans Day lands on it. The guides below show every date for 2026 and 2027, calculated from these rules and tested against SSA's official calendars.

Frequently asked questions
How does Social Security decide my payment date?
If you started benefits in May 1997 or later, by your birth date: the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Wednesday of the month. Earlier beneficiaries and people who also get SSI are paid on the 3rd. SSI itself is paid on the 1st.
Is SSDI paid on the same days as Social Security retirement?
Yes. SSDI uses the same birth-date Wednesday schedule and the same 3rd-of-month exception.
Why does my payment sometimes come a day early?
When the scheduled day is a weekend or federal holiday, Social Security pays on the business day before.
