Estimated arrival window
By February 22, 2027
- Status first available in Where's My Refund: Tuesday, February 2, 2027
- IRS timing: most e-filed refunds are issued by February 22, 2027
An estimate from IRS-published timelines, not a guarantee. Errors, identity checks or amended returns take longer.
What the IRS actually says about refund timing
- E-filed returns: the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days and gives about 3 weeks as its standard guidance.
- Paper returns: 6 or more weeks from the date the IRS receives your return.
- Refund checks: should arrive within 4 weeks from the date the IRS issues them.
- Where's My Refund: shows your status 24 hours after you e-file, or 4 weeks after you mail a paper return.
Banks also need time to post a deposit, and many don't process payments on weekends or holidays. A return with errors, a missing form, identity verification or an amended return takes longer than any of these timelines.
The EITC and ACTC refund hold
The PATH Act requires the IRS to hold refunds that include the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit until mid-February, and the hold covers your entire refund. For the 2026 filing season the IRS said most early filers who e-filed, chose direct deposit and had no issues could expect these refunds by March 2, 2026. The IRS publishes its early-March target each season; we update the estimator when it does.
Beware of refund date charts
Charts that promise "file on this date, get paid on that date" are not from the IRS. Use them as rough guides at best, and rely on Where's My Refund for your actual status.
Tax refund timing: common questions
Is there an official IRS refund schedule or calendar?
No. The IRS does not publish a refund calendar. Charts that show exact refund dates by filing date are estimates made by third parties. The IRS says most e-filed refunds are issued in less than 21 days, and the only official status is in Where's My Refund.
When will I get my tax refund in 2027 if I e-file?
The IRS issues most refunds for e-filed returns in less than 21 days, and about 3 weeks is its usual guidance. Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive it.
How long does a paper tax return refund take?
Six or more weeks from the date the IRS receives your mailed return. You can check the status in Where's My Refund about 4 weeks after you mail it.
Why is my refund delayed if I claimed the EITC or ACTC?
By law (the PATH Act), the IRS can't issue refunds that include the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. The hold applies to your whole refund, not just the credit.
How long does a refund check take to arrive?
The IRS says a paper refund check should arrive within 4 weeks of the date it is issued. Direct deposit avoids mail time.
When can I check Where's My Refund?
About 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, or 4 weeks after you mail a paper return.
