Why VA pays on the 1st for the month before
VA disability compensation and VA pension are paid in arrears. The payment that arrives at the start of a month is for the month that just ended: the money you get on March 1, 2027 is your February 2027 benefit. That is why your first payment after an award covers the previous month.
Federal law (38 U.S.C. §5120(e)) sets the timing when the 1st is not a business day: if the 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday, VA pays on the Friday before; if it is a federal holiday, VA pays on the weekday before the holiday. Because of this, some months the deposit lands on the last business day of the previous month.

VA disability payment dates that move in 2027
When a regular payment date lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment is made on the business day before. In 2027, 3 payments move earlier:
- the January payment due January 1, 2027 (New Year's Day) is paid Thursday, December 31, 2026.
- the May payment due May 1, 2027 (a Saturday) is paid Friday, April 30, 2027.
- the August payment due August 1, 2027 (a Sunday) is paid Friday, July 30, 2027.
